\u201cConcision is the mark of the true master\u201d – this insight from Goethe provides what might be called the motto for this album, recorded by Ludwig Quandt for <\/span><\/span>Campanella musica <\/span><\/span>shortly after the turn of the new millennium. Similar releases generally choose to highlight as many of the performer\u2019s skills as possible with a colourfully mixed programme, but here the principal cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic has concentrated on the music of one country and one century. Out of this concentration has arisen a positively sizzling medley which perfectly suits the creators of the music as well as its interpreter. From Zolt\u00e1n Kod\u00e1ly\u2019s epoch-making solo sonata op. 8 and Gy\u00f6rgy Ligeti\u2019s compressed early work to the furious <\/span><\/span>Toccata Capricciosa <\/i><\/span><\/span>op. 36 by Mikl\u00f3s R\u00f3zsa and the Five Pieces op. 56 no. 1 composed specially for this album by Gy\u00f6rgy Kurt\u00e1g, there is an exciting arc which is finally stretched to bursting point with Kod\u00e1ly\u2019s Duo sonata op. 4. It\u2019s splendid!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
